Here’s What You Should Know If You Are Choosing Cyber Security As Profession

Cyber security is the skill of tomorrow, highly needed at the current moment. As the technology sector shows a promising growth trend, so does cyber security. The more technologies in use, the more people needed to secure them. In this article, you will learn about the scope, salaries, courses, job market and nature of cyber security.

What is the scope of cyber security like?

The advent of new technologies and the increasing internet population and usage keeps cyber security on a rising curve and will keep on doing so for the foreseeable future. Technological innovations like Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things are paving the way to a hyper-connected and hyper-intelligent world of machines where humans will be relying on devices for a lot of the tasks that are still manual today. With that in mind, the future of cyber security can be rightly assessed as highly promising and booming for decades to come at the least.

There is a huge demand for cyber security professionals in the entire world, in almost every industry that makes use of the internet. Couple that with the terribly menial supply of cyber security professionals, and you will get a good idea of the job market. According to a study by Cyber security Ventures, the world will be facing a gap of 3.5 million unfilled cyber security jobs by next year, i.e. 2021. You should also consider the fact that more demand and less supply means more pay. In other words, the cyber security job market is looking nothing but great for prospective candidates.

What is the salary of cyber security professionals like?

Salaries for cyber security professionals have been looking good for some years now and will continue to be so for many years to come. As long as the demand keeps outstripping the supply, the salaries will remain promising. But that’s not the only factor that makes cyber security a high-earning career. The fact that cyber-security is becoming a top priority among organisations all over the world assures that cyber security professionals will be highly valued for their skills even in the coming future and that will directly reflect in their salaries. According to Glassdoor, the average base pay for cyber security salaries in India is 61,511 INR per month as of September, 2020. An average CEH’s salary starts at about $73,000 and goes up to $132,000 easily. Not to mention that cyber security professionals are one of the highest-paid professionals in the entire IT industry showing a more than 300% increase in demand over their counterparts.

What are the three approaches to cyber security?

The three tracks of cyber security are basically three approaches to securing data and these are: defensive, offensive and forensic. The defensive track deals with warding off cyber attacks by applying defense systems at appropriate places, whereas the offensive track deals with protecting systems by trying to break into them and then using the acquired information about the security posture to improve it and keep hackers at bay. The forensic track, at last, as the name suggests, deals with post-attack scenarios like forensic investigations and incident handling where cyber incidents are responded to properly in order to minimise losses and prevent future attacks.

What are some top certifications in cyber security?

There are many foundational level and advanced level courses in cyber security that can kickstart your career and provide you with globally revered certifications. One of the most demanded and valued certification that you can acquire is the Certified Ethical Hacker certification also known as CEH. Others are CompTIA Security+, Certified Information System Security Professional, Certified Network Defender, and the latest, Certified Penetration Testing Professional certification.

The LPT (Master) certification is also a coveted certification for penetration testers. Undertaking the CHFI course and the ECIH course will grant you a Computer Hacking forensic investigator and EC-Council Certified Incident handler certification respectively. In the end, just stay assured that if you have made up your mind for pursuing cyber security, then you have made the right decision indubitably.
