The Connection Between Dental Health And Sleep Quality

Many people don’t realize that to live a balanced life, it is essential to have good sleep quality. Having proper sleep every single night will maintain your body health and your mind working well. But not many people realize that your sleep quality plays a key role in how healthy your teeth are. Being sleep deprived will increase the risk of many oral diseases.

Toothache and Inflammation

As we all know, having any pain will be the worst enemy of anyone’s good night’s sleep. If you have any tooth pain that keeps you awake at night, you need to visit your dentist right away. Having oral health issues can turn your sleep issues into chronic ones. When you are losing sleep, you will be setting yourself up for a loop. You will not be able to sleep because of the pain, and your body will not be able to heal because it is not getting enough sleep. Always make sure that you take care of both your teeth and sleep routines to ensure good overall health.

Teeth Grinding

Grinding or clenching your teeth is called bruxism, which means that you have an unconscious action that is taking place during the night. Clenching means that your jaw remains firmly locked against each other, but grinding means that you are moving your lower jaw from side to side while it is clenching. Doing something like this during the night will drastically lower your sleep quality. Even though it is such a common condition, many people don’t realize they have it. Bruxism is triggered by genetics, stress, depression, anxiety, and some medication. To prevent your sleep quality from deteriorating, you have to ensure that you get a mouthguard. Many dental clinics, such as the Church St Dental, will encourage custom ones to ensure the best reasons. The treatment for something like this might also involve stress management courses to ensure your sleep quality and dental help improve.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a condition that causes periodic interruptions of breathing, lowering the levels of oxygen. This condition is usually associated with very loud snoring and fatigue during the day because of low sleep quality. The most common cause of sleep apnea is blockage of airway passages. It means that you most likely have a bad bite and a lack of space for the tongue. You must visit the orthodontist to help correct the jaw and teeth that will provide the tongue with enough space, so it improves your sleeping quality and breathing. Therefore, it will make you healthier, which means that you will improve your oral health. There are quite a few appliances a dentist might offer you as a solution that will improve your overall health.

A Strong Immune System Will Help To Fight Off Infections

As we all know, our immune systems are there to protect us from any illnesses and infections. It also implies that it has a big role in your dental health. When you are not getting enough sleep, your immune system will start to deteriorate, and it will soon not be able to fight off any infections that occur in your body. It means that it will be much easier for bacteria to attack your teeth and gums, which will lead to gum disease and tooth decay. Along with getting a good night’s rest, you should ensure that you are filing your diet with immune-boosting foods.

Poor Sleep Introduces Periodontitis

Many people don’t realize that not getting enough sleep will cause things such as gum diseases, especially periodontitis. It is a condition that will cause deep pockets to develop between your gums and teeth. It is mainly because of gum recession, and it will cause your teeth to be loose. In the worst-case scenario, it will cause bacteria to get inside and distort the bone.

Quality Sleep Strengthens Enamel

Another thing many people don’t realize is that sleep is linked to how fast your blood vessels are. When you eat foods that are filled with calculation and phosphate, they can be absorbed by your teeth. It will all straighten the enamel of your teeth, and it is all possible simply by sleeping well every night.

Poor Sleep Causes Dry Mouth

When you are not sleeping enough, you will continue to see how bad your dental health is. When you have poor sleep, it will cause your mouth to get dried out. When you have a dry mouth, it will harm your dental health and cause a lot of bacteria to build up, and all the build-up of acids will decay your teeth.

As you can see, there are many connections between dental health and sleep quality, so make sure that you are getting enough sleep every night to protect your teeth.
