It doesn’t matter what type of business you run. If you handle hazardous materials and waste, your company should operate under high safety standards. The potential for such materials to escape through an accident, neglect, or willful mishandling is high, so instilling the following five best practices for storing hazardous materials is important. Staying in compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations isn’t just good business; it’s a moral duty to the community and your employees.

Understanding Hazardous Material Storage

Hazardous materials require special handling due to their potential to cause harm. Whether due to toxicity, ignitability, corrosiveness, or reactivity, these substances can cause fires, injuries, explosions, and ecological and structural damage.

Such hazards can lead to financial loss, lawsuits, and soaring insurance premiums. Familiarize yourself with the hazardous materials you need to store, then follow this guide when setting up the storage area and safety protocols.

Segregation and Labeling

Some hazardous items won’t cause problems if you keep them far apart from each other. Different chemicals must be stored in separate containers and spaces. Even if something leaks out of its container, the likelihood of an even worse reaction is improbable. Label all containers clearly, and highlight warning labels. Knowing what’s inside tips off handlers and others to the contents and what they can do to protect themselves.

Adequate Storage Facilities

Invest in effective storage facilities. HAZMAT lockers and special containers raise guards against spills and bad reactions. All holding facilities must accommodate your storage needs, including temperature requirements, containment equipment, and other safety features. The storage facility is the first line of defense in the event of an accident.

Regular Inspection and Maintenance

HAZMAT storage isn’t a “set it and forget it” situation. Conduct periodic inspections of the facility and its contents. Look for wear and tear, situations and setups that could lead to damage to the containers, and leaks and spills. Also, test all safety features in and around the unit. Make personal protective equipment (PPE) readily available for employees, as well. Routine checks can eliminate issues before they escalate.

Comprehensive Training Programs

Make sure employees understand safety protocols regarding HAZMAT management. Conduct periodic training and educational sessions, familiarizing them with current regulations and any changes in HAZMAT incident handling. Cover proper use of equipment and personal protective equipment. Conduct hypothetical drills, time their reactions, and work to shave seconds off their responses. Employee training in HAZMAT storage protocols is a necessity, so don’t skimp on it!

These five best practices for storing hazardous materials can form a foundation for you and your employees to establish a safer workplace.
