10 Great Tips For House Refreshing For The Next Season

With spring right around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about refreshing your home to welcome the new season. Winter can be a bit drab. Spring is a time of rebirth and fresh starts, so it’s no wonder that many of us want to take this opportunity to make some changes in our homes. Being confined to one space for months on end can get monotonous, repetitive, and oppressive. Freshening up your home for the next season of the year does not have to be a big deal or requires you to spend a lot of money. If you’ve got the time and energy, it’s easy to make some simple changes that will make you feel like you’re living in a brand new home.

Below, we share with you great ideas!

1. Start with a clean slate

One of the best ways to refresh your space is by getting rid of the things you don’t need. If you haven’t used certain things in six months or more, then you don’t need them. One easy way to start is by going through your storage areas, closets, drawers, and cupboards. Next, go through your fridge and pantry.

2. Be tidy

There are many health benefits of decluttering and cleaning up your space: less stress (who doesn’t want that?), more energy, and improved mood, to name a few. A quick wipe down of your kitchen countertops or closet shelves will make a big difference in how you feel about those spaces—and any others that are gathering dust.

3. Rearrange your furniture

If you’re looking to make a big change without spending a dime, why not move your furniture around? Switching things up and creating new vignettes can help every room in your home feel like new—and it’s so easy to do! If you’ve been longing for a different layout but aren’t sure where to start, simply map out the dimensions of your space on graph paper to get an idea of what looks best.

4. Change your linens

As the seasons change, it’s time to swap out your bedding to match the warmer weather. We recommend sticking with all-season bedding if you don’t want to buy two sets of sheets and comforters every year, but switching out your pillowcases, shams, and throw blankets is always a good idea. If you have a sleeping problem, changing your bedding can help you sleep better in a new environment.

5. Create a Zen Space

With everyone working from home, it’s vital to create a space that makes you feel happy and productive. Maybe it means setting up a desk in your bedroom, where there is less noise and distraction. Or if you’re working from the kitchen or dining room table, try creating a designated “work zone” by placing a small rug under your chair or hanging dividers behind you so that when work is done for the day, it feels like work has ended.

6. Paint

A fresh coat of paint is the least expensive way to make an impact, and can easily be done by the homeowner. Painting a room can be a fun project to do with your family, and will have an instant and dramatic effect on your home’s feel. If you are painting a room it is best to start with the ceiling and then work your way down from there. If you want to save some time skip the ceiling and just paint the walls for now. You can always come back to tackle the ceiling later if you are ambitious.

You should also pay extra attention to your yard and outdoor space. Now is the right time to do a cement rendering and make your house look new!

7. Swap and share with friends or family members

Before you go out and buy new accent pieces, look around at what you already have in your home. Chances are, you have some décor items lying around that simply don’t fit the design style of a particular room—but maybe perfect in another part of the house! So round up those pieces and ask friends and family members to do the same. Then host a swapping party and give each person’s discarded décor a happy home.

8. Hang some fresh art

We’re not talking about buying new art here — instead, take down what you already have and re-hang it in a new way. “Changing up the art on your walls is another great way to refresh your space,” suggests home decor expert Nicole Gibbons. “Just because something has hung in one spot for years doesn’t mean it needs to stay there forever.” She also loves taking art out of its frame and switching out the mat for a new look or hanging several small pieces together instead of using just one large print.

9. Clean and organize closets

If you’re like most of us, your closet is filled with clothes you wear only once in a while. Take an hour or two and go through everything in your closet to determine what you don’t need or want anymore. Then decide what you will do with it: donate it, sell it online, or give it away to family or friends.

10. Clean your floors

The best way to clean your floors is to go old-school and mop them the way your grandparents did it. Invest in a durable mop with a washable head, and fill a bucket with warm water and an environmentally friendly cleaning solution. Have a separate bucket of clean water to rinse the mop after each use. Use this method for all hardwood, vinyl, stone, tile, and laminate surface floors, as well as linoleum, but avoid using too much water on wood because it can cause damage.
