1. Use The Right Kind Of Paints
There are different types of paints out there. As such, it can be difficult for a beginner to make the right choice of paint to achieve a perfect finishing. There are primers, specialist paints for covering blemishes like moulds, rusts, dust, etc., emulsions, water-based paint, solvent-based paints, and acrylics are also types of paint, to name a few.
We recommend water-based paints for woodworks. However, use solvent-based paints for outdoors paintings because they are more durable than water-based paints. When you want to clean solvent-based paint on your brush, you can use a turpentine substitute to get rid of it. Always finish on an upward stroke with your paint-brush, especially when you are using solvent-based paint, this will help you achieve a perfect finish, and the brush strokes will disappear or become less visible.
2. Use The Right Tools
Get good quality brushes. They last long and can be used to achieve perfect finishes. You can use them on any surface, be it floors, walls, and even exterior brickwork and plaster. Clean up your brushes immediately after use to prevent them from damaging quickly.
3. Stir It
Stir the paint well because it takes time to separate, mainly if it has stayed for a long time. In the case where the paint was mixed already in the store, you have to mix it gently for 5 minutes. This act will prevent too many air bubbles inside the paint. If you are using paints from two different pots, you have to mix them before stirring as mixed colours can have subtle differences.
4. Keep It Wet
Sometimes, it is difficult to achieve a perfect finish. The best way to avoid a patchy wall is to paint your wall in one go without letting the paint dry. Work from one side to the other side of the wall, and ensure that the edge of the last paint doesn’t dry before you roll on more of it.
Ideally, you have to do the cutting at the same time you are using the roller.
5. Tape It
It is quicker and convenient to use a little masking tape if you are running out of time. However, the best thing to do is to remove the switches and sockets for painting and then reattach them when you finish.
6. Remove it
If you used masking tape, then you have to remove them after work. If it is left longer, it can stick to the walls, and it will rip off the paint below when removing it.
Paint the edges of the masking tape the colour you are bordering on first. It will seal the edge of the tape and prevent any other paint from going under it, and it will help you achieve a perfectly crisp and clean line
This trick is highly useful if you are painting a drastically different colour.
7. Order It
Some orders need to be followed to prevent paint splashing on other painted areas. For instance, if you are painting the ceiling, start with it first before the walls. This order will prevent the blobs of paints from touching the finished walls.
8. Prime It
You have to prepare your surface first, especially if you are painting a newly plastered wall or untreated woodwork.
9. Sand It
You must do sanding no matter the surface. Any paint finish is only as good as the preparation you have done beforehand. When painting woodwork, sanding is also essential.
10. Sample It
First of all, paint your samples on a large piece of paper before doing so on a wall. There are many reasons why you should test your samples. The benefit of sampling is that you can move around with them; If you are moving to a new house, you have lots of samples to take with you instead of buying new sample pots. This method is flexible, and one can make an easy comparison.
